Storyboard Text

  • Ughhhh, my stomach hurts!
  • No I don't think so, I just always feel really sick after eating bread and stuff.
  • Well that's what celiac disease is. It's an immune reaction caused by eating gluten, which is what that bread you're eating has in it. Only 3% of the population has it.
  • Looks like your stomach hurts because you keep eating that bread. Do you have celiac disease?
  • So that's why my stomach always hurts when I eat bread?
  • Oh no! Why do I have this? Am I sick?
  • No you're not sick. It's because of your genes. Someone else in your family probably had the same or similar disease as you.
  • Sort of. It's not your stomach being hurt from eating it, it's your small intestines being hurt., which comes after the stomach, but before the rectum.
  • What do I do to make it go away?
  • There are many gluten-free products that you could use as a substitute, but if you eat a little gluten every once in a while that's okay, it just might not feel so good.
  • But everything that has gluten in it is so good!
  • Well there aren't any treatments or cures for celiac disease. You just have to simply stop eating gluten.
  • What could happen to me if I keep eating gluten?
  • Well if you keep eating gluten, there could be some complications like malnutrition, bone loss, depression, dental defects, and even lymphoma and bowel cancer.
  • What about the long term side effects?
  • Well, some regular short term side effects of eating gluten vomiting, diarrhea, head and stomach aches, fatigue and weakness, constipation, etc.
  • Can I get tested for celiac disease to see if I really have it?
  • Of course! We do a test after someone that believe they have a gluten allergy eats gluten and do a biopsy of their small intestine.
  • Wow! Well thanks for helping me find out I have celiac disease and can't eat bread or pretty much anything good anymore!
  • You're very welcome.
