Thunder and lightning crash above a Scottish moor. Three haggard old women, the witches, appear out of the storm. In eerie, chanting tones, they make plans to meet again upon the heath, after the battle, to confront Macbeth. As quickly as they arrive, they disappear.

The Captain—an unnamed wounded officer—reports to Duncan and Malcolm, the king's older son, about the state of the battle at the time he left it, saying that Macbeth fought his way through the melee until he could find Macdonwald and kill him.

The witches tell Macbeth and Banquo three prophecies: Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth will be king, and Banquo's sons will be future kings of Scotland.
