Storyboard Text

  • Flashback
  • The other victory would be much harder, but she knew that it was what she wanted. It was not that she was being noble or anything. It was just that she had learned that there were other ways of getting into the great hall, blazing with lights, of people and life. Plath 9
  • Symbol
  • Outside, the sparrows still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike. And then, for some reason, Millicent thought of the Heather Birds
  • Simile
  • The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar. Plath 2
  • The beginning and end of the story takes place with Millicent sitting on a woodpile. During her time on the woodpile she has a flashback to her initiation. The importance of this flashback is that it shows she is being reflective and thinking about her final decision.
  • Character
  • There was something something about her tone that annoyed Millicent. It was almost malicious. And there was an unpleasant anonymity about the label "gopher," even if that was what they always called the girls being initiated. It was degrading, like being given a number. It was a denial of individuality. Plath 5
  • The Heather Bird is a free and uniquely colored bird. The sparrow is a dull colored bird that stay on flocks. Millicent sees herself as the Heather Bird, unique and different. She sees the other sorority girls as the sparrows, similar and unchanging.
  • Personification
  • There has been a silence, a slight crunching sound, and then she had felt the cold, slimy egg-white flattening and spreading on her head and sliding down her neck. Plath 2
  • At the beginning of the story, Millicent is locked in a basement .
  • Simile
  • Bev is a Big Sister in a sorority that Millicent has been assigned to. Bev has an almost malicious and annoying voice. She's also a two-faced person. She's mean and rude to the initiates, and then she can be nice for the boys.
  • Egg had been smashed on her head.
  • Simile mentioned in Millicent's acceptance.
  • Air like Honey
