This important yellow paper he had been working for several hours for the past few days had kept him very busy leaving him no time to spare to his wife, which shows he is self conceited and hardworking. He creates no time to spend quality time with his wife. Clare must feel forgotten and unimportant to Tom since he gives her no attention ever since he started working on this proposal.
Toms proposal that he's been spending hours on to try and receive a pay raise has flew out the window. Tom must feel frustrated now because that yellow paper has important information that is priceless to him. Without the paper he would have no chance in earning a pay raise, Tom is clearly annoyed because of how valuable that proposal is towards him.
Tom initially goes out to retrieve the paper carefully, but without much concern. As Tom bends down to retrieve the paper, the true danger of his situation becomes clear as he views the street 11 stories below him. He is then paralyzed by his fear, and unable to move.
Tom doesn't give up on trying to get his paper back. He attempts many dangerous things to try and get saved from people in the city but fails to accomplish that. Tom is represented as a motivated and risk taking character due to the fact that he is asking his own life on a window ledge for a paper, when really he should have been going to the movies with his wife which is much more superior.
Tom was so determined to get his proposal back that he decided to risk his own life on the ledge of a window. He could have died trying to attempt all these different ways to get back the yellow paper. Tom also is very brave to continuously try and attempt to getting back in by dangerous ways that could kill him.
Tom has clearly evolved as a character from the beginning of the story since his entire attitude on his pay raise has changed. Tom realizes that he to spend time with his wife instead of worrying so much about other things that aren't as important as the loved ones you have around you. Tom finally sees by the very end that a piece of paper is much more valuable than his wife.
