The exposition started out with all the people(300) in the village starting to gather around in the town square. At this time, it was the start of summer(June 2) and school just ended so the lottery would start. The children gathered first then the women and men. The lottery was conducted by Mr.Summers. Mr.Summers also ran the coal business.
The conflict in this story is the lottery. If you are chosen from the lottery, your family will put there names in a box and the name that is picked will be stoned. The way your family is picked is when the head of the family picks a piece of paper from the black box. This piece of paper must have a black dot on
The original box for the lottery was lost long ago, and the black box was put into use even before the oldest man in town was born. They then mixed up the papers and declared the lottery open. Mrs.Hutchinson slips into the croud looking for her husband. Now since the lottery started they started calling names.
The climax starts out with Bill Hutchinson reaching into the black box to pick out his piece of paper. This was the paper with the black dot which meant that someone in his family would be stoned.
Bill Hutchinson and his family had to pick out of the box again to see who would get stoned. The person that was picked was the wife Tessie. This means that she would have to be stoned.
Finally a stone was thrown and it struck Tessie in the head while she was trying to say that it isn't fair. Everyone started to gather around about to throw more stones.
