The story is set in the palace of old King PIttheus of Troezen. Our main character Theseus has grown up in this palace with his mother Princess Aethra. He grew up brave, strong, and handsome.
Meeting with a Mentor
Theseus's mother had always taken him to a great black stone for his birthday. He could never move it. On his eighteenth birthday he moved it and discovered his father's gold-hilted sword and embroidered sandals.
Crossing the Threshold
Theseus was distraught when he found out that he was the son of a mortal, KIng Agegus of Athens, and no demigod. He had always an idea that he was the son of Poseidon which made him think he could be like his famed cousin who was a demigod. It was the only thing that made him reluctant of his quest.
Tests, Allies, & Enemies
Theseus gets advice from his grandfather, King Pittheus. He tells him he should go by sea to get to his father since the roads are so dangerous. He ignores this advice though saying it is better to fight these troubles than to avoid them.
After talking with his grandfather he finally sets off on foot. As he strode his mind was busy with thoughts of Athens. He also thought of high deeds he would do.
Theseus faces tests of fighting many foes on his way to his father. He met a gracious stranger who took Theseus to the stranger's home. As they ate food in the house the stranger servant warned that he was known as the Stretcher and that the Stretcher would kill Theseus. Theseus took the advice of this new ally and killed the Stretcher.
