Good morning class! We will be starting a unit on farms in Iowa. In this project we will focus on growing your ability to retell stories making sure you include all of the key details.
The information you hear will help you with your webquest! This information will come in handy so make sure you are taking notes and that you are capable of telling me what happened in this video! This will be your responsibility so be prepared.
There are many different things that a farmer has to do on a farm, to keep it running. From feeding animals, growing crops, and harvesting crops farmers have much to do.
Cows, pigs, and chicken are some of the most common animals on farms in Iowa. Farms have cows for different purposes. Some are used as dairy cows and others are beef cows. Did you know that cows have 4 different parts of their stomach! Because of their stomachs cows eat tough plants and grasses. They can also weigh up to 4000 pounds!
Dairy cows eat a very well balanced diet. Dairy farmers have to closely watch and ration the cows diet.Three months into life cows are moved from drinking milk to eating hay and other grains. Did you know cows can be picky eaters? Cows are known for picking through their food to eat only what they like most!
Animals are not the only thing that farmers need to care for. They have to care for their crops. In caring for their crops they need to have many different kinds of machines. Farmers use a plow when preparing their land for crops. Did you know plows date back to 5500BC.Since then plows have come a long way but they still have a resemblance of the first ones made.
