Jay Gatsby believes that everything in the past can happen again shown"Can't repeat the past?" he cried incredulously. "Why of course you can!" (Fitzgerald 110). This is important because as readers, we can see how Gatsby thinks and how much he once enjoyed the past. The author's purpose for this is to explain how Gatsby is always thinking and has not moved on from his past life.
Gatsby wishes that him and Daisy could go back to how it was 5 years ago shown" One of them was that, after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house- just as if it were five years ago"(Fitzgerald 109). This is important because we know that Gatsby wants Daisy to end it with Tom and Pammy and go back to their past times. The clock is being compared to broken time shown "Luckily the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back in place"(Fitzgerald 86). This is important because Daisy and Gatsby's past relationship can not be fixed just like the past can't be repeat. The author's purpose was to show that Gatsby wants to change the past and make things like they used to be.
