You let the fire go out! I saw a ship!
An airplane full of young boys is shot down. Two of the survivors; Ralph and Piggy meet. While looking at the lagoon Ralph spots a conch shell, and Piggy suggests that Ralph should blow into it.
Several boys appeared from out of the forest and gathered on the beach. A redheaded boy named Jack came marching with a group of boys behind him (Roger, Samneric, Simon). There was a vote on who should be leader, everyone voted for Ralph. Ralph made Jack and his group the hunters. They must keep the signal fire going.
Jack becomes obsessed with his role as hunter. Rather than attending to the fire he leaves to hunt pig. Ralph sees a ship, and realizes there is no smoke. Jack comes back from the hunt with meat, but Ralph is furious because Jack let the fire go out.
