Storyboard Text

  • Meat prices are rising, and we have to find a way to transport the cattle. The long drive has begun. Cowboys would take long trips on horseback to get the herds of cattle safely to the next destination.
  • Our next stop is the cow towns. Abilene and Dodge city were two of the important stations. They were often small and isolated towns that were stopping points for the cowboys.
  • This is the wild west, and it wasn't as glorious as it seemed. Cowboys like me drank, gambled, got into fist fights, and even sometimes deadly gunfights.
  • Let's hope I don't get in the middle of any fights...
  • Thanks to the Homestead Act of 1862, I get 160 acres of land just for paying a filing fee! I have to live here for five years, but this is so nice I might stay here my whole life!
  • These are the boomers, Oklahoma homesteaders eager to claim new land. Unfortunately for them, the sooners beat them to it. They claimed the land illegally before anyone else could.
  • Welcome to my farm on the plains! I am one of the many sodbusters who claimed land on the plains and started farms.
