This storyboard is the preview for a 2-3 minute iMovie on creating a community of learners.
Rules in Mrs. Grimm's class 1. Respect Each Other 2. Arrive on time, ready to have fun and learn 3. If homework gets done, Friday is ALL FUN!
Welcome each student individually as they walk into class. Have them sit at their tables that are put in groups of four. Explain that there is a notecard in front of each student to write down some personal info for me: likes ,dislikes, so I can get to know each of you.
After they are done with notecards go outside for some fun get to know each other name games and mini PE lesson.
Once we come back inside, ask the students to look around. The classroom looks like a blank slate, because it is. I want them help me decorate the class with their own work. (building a sense of community by giving them ownership of the room)
First lets come up with some class rules together. Then discuss my feelings on discipline and explain restorative practices. Finally talk to them about my incentive on doing homework: Friday game day!
Next, let's get started on the room. Each group has been given a set of decorations and a part of the wall that they are in charge of. I also want them to create some posters of professionals in the math, science and literature fields showing them how they may use this knowledge in the future (real world application).
Have each student leave a post it on the door of what they would like to learn this year. Explain that this is just for today, normally each day they will leave a post it of something they learned that day.
