Same with the x axis, if you go left it is negative and if you go right it's positive
Displacement is the moving of something from its place or position. It tells you your position after you have moved from the reference point to the point you are at now.

My reference point is 0. I traveled 2 miles east, and since east is to the right it would be positive, so 0+2=2. I then traveled 3 miles west. Since going west means going to the left, it means you are going backwards on the number line. 2-3= -1. If you go 5 miles west again that means you are going backwards from -1, so -1-5= -6 miles west

Velocity is the rate of change of displacement per the time(ex: minutes, seconds). If I wanted to figure out the velocity I would divide displacement by time. Since we figured out that the displacement equals -6 and the time it took for me to get there would be 25 minutes, I would do -6 / 25, which equals -.24 miles west and the units would be miles per minute
