This quote leads to the theme because Jim's watch was one his fathers and grandfathers, and he sold it to buy his wife a Christmas gift. His watch was very valuable to him.
This example represents how anxious and nervous Della was when she got her cut. Della asked for 20 dollars when she got her hair cut to buy her husband a Christmas gift. Everyone loved her hair and was jealous of it.
The combs that Jim bought for Della is what represents his love. It represents his love because he sold his most valuable possession just for his wife to make her happy.
