As the first chapter began the setting is introduced as Macomb county, where Atticus, his two kids scout and Jem, and their house keeper Calpurnia, who plays a mother role live. His kids play during the summer with their neighbor Dill.

Summer ends, school begins. Scouts first day of school begins and ends terribly. She got in trouble multiple times by her teacher Ms.Caroline first for knowing how to read and also informing Miss Caroline about Walter Cunningham's ways. She was punished.
Jem invited Walter over to dinner. Walter has a different food habit and whenever Scout sees this she questions him in a harsh way. Calpurnia then calls her into the kitchen to explain to her that even though his eating habits and life are different than theirs doesn't mean he's any less than them.
In this chapter Scout, Jem, and Dill play the "Boo Radley" game acting out Boo killing his dad. Atticus finds them playing this game and makes them stop immediately.

This chapter Dill and Jem become best friends and start leaving Scout out, as soon as she notices this she becomes friends with her neighbor. Miss Maudie explains her feelings on the Radley family.
On Dill's last day in Maycomb him and Jem go to the Radley place to peak through the shutter. They see a figure and bolt. Jem looses his pants on the way home they got caught on a fence. When Atticus questions him about it Dill interrupts and says he won them playing a game of strip poker.
