Storyboard Text

  • Four major roles women played in the war effort included: spying, fundraising, camp following, and active physical support. Perhaps the most heroic of them all, Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man in order to serve in the Continental Army.
  • Women in the War
  • The British recruited most of the Iroquois since they had a lot of land and people. The Iroquois supported the British in exchange for British goods and their own land from the American settlers.
  • Native Americans in the War
  • Africans joined the British side because they were promised freedom in exchange for military service. The freed blacks were the ones to mostly participate in the physical fighting (on both sides) of the war. Enslaved blacks were usually doing labor like cooking and being artisans.

  • Foreign-Born Heroes of the Revolution
  • One major hero is Baron von Steuben, a Prussian man who provided military help as well as improved discipline of the American soldiers at Valley Forge. He has a county jail named after him in New York.
  • Ciphers and secret codes were used to make sure that the message of a letter could not be understood if it was stolen. Robert Townshend was a member of the Culper Spy Ring and gathered intelligence by hiding in public places and paying close attention to others.
  • Espionage/Intelligence Gathering
  • Basic weapons included: muskets, pistols, bayonets, cannons, and sword/tomahawk. Most soldiers used a bayonet, a sword-like blade used for stabbing.
