  • In The Giver, "Communities" are the perfect society in which everything is the same, and all of the citizens live in harmony, under surveillance by the government at all times, with little to no freedom. 
  • Climax
  • Jonas is skipped at the ceremony of twelve. At the end of the ceremony we find out that Jonas was assigned the special job of "Receiver of Memory," which is why he was skipped.
  • Falling Action
  • The Giver gives Jonas many memories of the past like sunshine, colors, snow, sleds, sunburns, and war.
  • Resolution
  • Jonas takes Gabriel and escapes the community on his fathers bicycle.
  • Jonas and Gabriel go farther and farther away from the community out into the wilderness.
  • Jonas and Gabriel reach the sled and see the lights in the distance and the story ends.
