  • Northern Free States: Feelings about state additions?
  • It should not be up to the people, but to Congress to decide.
  • Northern Free States: Feelings about 36°30′ line?
  • Yay! 
  • The 36°30′ line will have more antislavery states above the line.
  • Northern Free States: Who was involved?
  • In order to keep northerners happy, Maine will be accepted as a free state.
  • The compromise will insure that slavery is kept in the south. 
  • Northerners believed that Congress should be the only one to have the power to determine if states have slaves or not.
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about state additions?
  • The people of the incoming state must be the ones to decide the matter.
  • Northers accepted the line only because they knew there were more anti-slave states above the line .
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line?
  • Although the plan is unfair, at least we will be expanding to the west.
  • And as we move west, we will be able to acquire more slaves. 
  • James Tallmadge and John W. Taylor were the leading northern Congressmen in the slavery debate for the north.

  • To respect the will of the people, Missouri was admitted as a slave state.
  • This will balance the amount of slave and free states in the Senate.

  • Southerners thoughts that the people should be the ones to decide if they wanted slaves or not.
  • He is correct, we cannot forget about people's rights.
  • Southerners thought it was unfair, however they knew later on they would expand westward so they could get more land.
  • Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were southerners who came up with the Missouri Compromise.
