Storyboard Text

  • Kristina's Meal
  • Kristina is at a fast food restaurant enjoying a burger, smoothie and fries.
  • Kristina takes a bite of the burger and chews it with her teeth. Her saliva glands secrete saliva so the food can break down. Once the food is finished being chewed it is a clump known as a bolus. Then Kristina swallows her food.
  • Mouth
  • The bolus then travels down the esophagus using a muscular contraction known as peristalsis. The food then moves on to the stomach.
  • Esophagus
  • Once the bolus enters the stomach it gets churned by the muscular wall of the stomach and gastric acids are secreted for chemical digestion. The food and the gastric acids in this form are known as chyme. From here it moves into the small intestine.
  • Stomach
  • When the chyme enters the small intestine, the walls of the small intestine absorb nutrients from within the chyme. The nutrients then go into the bloodstream. Bile from the liver and acids from the pancreas help with digestion. From here the food goes into the large intestine.
  • Small Intestine
  • In the large intestine, the remaining water and liquids are removed from the food and all that is left is the waste. There are bacterias in the stomach that break down the indigestible fibres. From here the remaining food is expelled through the anus.
  • Large Intestine
