John Holland was raised and born in Omaha, Nebraska. Holland graduated from Central High, Omaha Nebraska in 1983. He joined the army after graduating from college, becoming engaged with the events of WWII. After leaving the army he recieved a masters degree in physchology. Holland joined John Hopkins University Sociology department in 1969.
