One of the ways women helped in the war was to be a camp follower, tending to the injured and hydrating soldiers.
Foreign Born Heroes in the War
Jane McCrea was a Loyalist woman killed by a Loyalist Native American warrior. A painting about this was used as propaganda against natives by exaggerating McCrea's beauty and the natives' wickedness.
Both the British and Americans promised freedom for the Africans who sided with them. The British fulfilled their promises, but the Americans did not. Most enslaved African Patriots returned to their former lives.
Baron von Steuben was a major Prussian general in the Continental Army. He introduced sanitation measures and educated soldiers in European tactics, such as using a bayonet.
Thomas Hickey was a Patriot soldier during the war, but was actually a British spy. He was found guilty of treason. plotting the assassination of George Washington. He was hanged in New York City.
Life for Patriot prisoners was miserable and rotten, filled with disease and filth. Conditions were completely unsanitary.
