The Book Thief takes place in Moching, Germany under the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. A young girl named Liesel Meminger is sent to live with her new foster parents after the death of her brother. She is hesitant at first but learns that although money is tight, her new parents have plenty of love to give
The conflict of The Book Thief starts when Liesel arrives on Himmel street and meets Hans and Rosa Hubermann. The main conflict has to do with Liesel growing up very poor with her new family in Nazi Germany and how she deals with the problems.
As Liesel grows up in Himmel Street, she meets many people but also encounters many problems. As the war progresses and Rosa is laid off, Liesel meets Max and the two quickly become great friends. Unfortunately after Hans tries to help a fallen Jew the family is forced to send him away out of fear. Soon after, Hans is sent off to war and Liesel is left alone with Rosa and her books. Although Hans does return, the joy is short lived...
Liesel is working on her auto-biography late at night in the basement when Himmel Street falls victim to an air raid. As she is pulled out of the ruble, Liesel starts screaming in vain for Hans. The first person she finds is Rudy, and she cries over his body. After that she finds Hans and Rosa lying together in the ruble. Liesel is overcome with grief and has trouble even approaching them.
PAPA PLEASE WAKE UP!!
Liesel is soon taken with the accordion to the police station where Frua Hermenn takes her to her house. At her parents funeral Frua Hermann stands with Liesel as people mutter about how she was the only survivor of Himmel Street. Much later Liesel has a fateful reuniting with Max, who lived through the concentration camp.
The book ends with Liesel meeting Death in her old age as he comes to take her away. Before leaving, they sit together on a bench and Death returns "The Book Thief" to Liesel and tells her that he is haunted by humans.
