  • The three governor controversy.
  • Blacks sued the state due to the fact they were denied the right of voting. The US supreme court ruled them unconstitutional.
  • Governor Ellis Arnall did not fight the ruling of the blacks after they lost the case.
  • Eugene Talmadge
  • In 1946  there was a election to elect the governor where 3 men claimed to have won the election. Eugene Talmadge was righfully re-elected as the governor but he died before he could take office
  • Ellis Arnall
  • Melvin E. Thompson
  • Melvin Thompson took it upon himself to move into office without permission.  But the current governor ( Ellis Arnall ) decided not to give up office util the matter was resolved.
  • In conclusion Eugene Talmadge's son "Herman Talmadge" was elected in a special election two years later in 1948 as an special election.
