The Starving Times: Winter 1609-10
I'm so hungry I could eat a boot
I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!!
These foolish Europeans are surrounded by the Powhatan Nation, 20,000 strong. We will starve them out.
They came unprepared for the harsh life that awaited them here.
We didn't bring any livestock, we were just looking for gold. I didn't think we were going to have to grow all our own food!!
We are overcome by hunger. We only have have enough food to sustain 1 in 5 of us.
The land was inhabited by plants and animals not familiar to the settlers.
But the settlers were completely focused on striking gold not establishing sustainance
They however, have neglected to grow these as well. If they had not been so greedy, hunger might have spared them. We will not be so kind.
We have cultivated potatoes, corn, squash, pumpkins and other plants unique to the Americas
