Chapter 1: Yanek, his uncle Moshe, and his father were listening to the radio about the Germans who are coming to finish the war and kill all Jews. He puts on his proudly made projector but is interrupted by the news. His father thinks it will only last about 6 months.
Chapter 11: Uncle Moshe had just brought Yanek a mushy carrot, and Yanek was thinking about giving the man he shared a bunk with some because he was a Musselman and was fighting for his life, and Yanek was hearing him take his last breaths, but remembered was Uncle Moshe said on not sharing if you want to survive.
Chapter 14: Yanek was working by moving the rocks to another side, but then the Nazi in charge said that they had to move them back and forth, and back and forth.
