This is Wes pulling a knife on a neighborhood kid he was playing football with. The only thing going through Wes' mind was Tony saying "send a message". "He could have fought back on the spot and settled it. But when Wes looked into the other boy's, he knew he had to send a message."(32) Wes thought this would solve things, instead, he was arrested.
In this scene, Wes is being the bigger person by, settling the fight with no violence. This may result in a very different outcome.
Because Wes settled things more maturely as seen in the last scene, everyone got along and continued to play football without violence.
Since Wes hasn't experienced being arrested for violence, he has a better reputation. I think this would have had a different impact on Wes' life, Because he doesn't have a dangerous reputation, I think he wouldn't feel the need to get into gangs and the drug business.
