  • The north and the south debated over whether slavery should be won in war against Mexico. To stop the arguing, Senator Douglas passed the Compromise of 1850.
  • Free states!!!

  • The compromise consisted of letting California enter the Union as a free state, and organizing the remaining land into two territories, Utah and Nevada, and let the new territories decide on whether or not they will allow slavery

  • The Compromise also insured that Slave Trade in Washington DC would stop. and that Northerners had to return slaves that had escaped from the South.

  • Arkansas wasn't sure of what to do. The people did want to let the slaves be free in the Union though.

  • The North and South debated some more, which caused the Kansas/Nebraska Act, which was passed by none other than Senator Douglas!
