Esperanza and her family move to a new home in a crowded Latino neighborhood on Mango St. Esperanza vows to herself that she would someday get out of Mango Street and buy a new house for herself.

Esperanza's contempt for her neighborhood grows as she continues to live there. She experiences deaths and sees the abuse of women around her. She ends up taking comfort in her sexually adventurous friend, Sally.
I am going to have my own home one day. All I need is myself as I am going to be a successful writer!
Esperanza and Sally decide to go to the carnival together. Sally leaves Esperanza alone and, without her presence, Esperanza gets sexually assaulted by a group of boys.
Esperanza finds a newfound appreciation for her old friends and her home on Mango St.
