This shows how Jani was born with Schizophrenia, but no one even knew. Even as she got older, doctors, psychologists and family members still did not know what was going on or what to do.
Janni’s first imaginary friend was a dog named "Low" that came right before her third birthday. Later Jani mentions they all come from a place called Calilini, which is described as a desert island off the coast of California (18).
This is when Jani hits her little brother because her imaginary cat threatens her to."January! Why did you do that?" "400 told me to do it. He scratches at my head until I do what he tells me to do" (72).
This was a story her dad told about how they went to a store and Jani tried to show the clerk her "pet rat." Since he didn't want to say it was imaginary in front of Jani, it scared the store clerk. “I have seven rats at home, I even have one right here in my pocket. Want to see?” (46).
This shows the conflict the parents would face trying to deal with everyday challenges involving Jani. "Just leave her! She needs to make friends!" "I'm not going to just leave her because you don't want to deal with her! She doesn't want to be at this birthday party, and I'll be damned if i let her stay" (24).
This scene shows how her parents continued to try to find help, but no one knew how to help or what was wrong. "I have seen cases like this before, and all it is, is the child needing attention and trying to have authority over their parent" (67).
