  • The estates general
  • In 1305 a Frenchman was elected pope. Four years later he moved the papal court to Avignon, where french rulers could exercise more control.
  • Eventually the move led to a crisis in the church when another pope was elected in Rome. The rival Popes each claimed to be the leader of the church.
  • During the struggle with the pope Phillip rallied support by setting up the estates general. This body had representatives from all three estates or classes: clergy, nobles, townspeople. The estates general never gained the power of the purse or balanced royal power.
