Storyboard Text

  • The Chuch and State should not mix, there will be problems
  • Charlemagne, you are now the emperor!
  • Let's work together so we can become more powerful.
  • Around the year 500, Pope Gelasius I predicted that there would be problems between church and state.
  • The emperor has too much power! He must be controlled.
  • 300 years later, Charlemange is crowned as Roman Emperor, and the problems began. He was the first to have policies of working with the church.
  • You're excommunicated!
  • Step down!
  • Then, about a century later, Otto I decided to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Charlemagne.
  • I'm so sorry
  • After Otto conquered Italy, many of the Italian nobles and the Popes to follow did not like a king controlling Italy and the King appointing members of the clergy. This foreshadowed future problems, such as the showdown at Canossa.
  • Time passed and eventually, Pope Gregory was fed up with the King's power, so he ordered King Henry IV to stop infrastructure. This angered Henry, so Henry ordered Gregory to step down. Gregory excommunicated Henry in response to him not following the Church's orders.
  • No one respected or listened to Henry after he was excommunicated, so full of regret he asked Gregory to be let back into the church. As a man of God, Gregory forgave Henry and all returned to normal and the fight over lay infrastructure continued.
