Storyboard Text

  • There is all this open land here in Nebraska, I wish this was a territory so we could live here legally
  • Representatives for the South
  • We don't want to permit a Nebraska territory because the land lay north of the 36°30' parallel  and things are fairly balanced between the North and South
  • I suggest a bill that will divide the land west of Missouri into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. I argue for popular sovereignty, which would allow the settlers of the new territories to decide if slavery would be legal there.
  • Stephen A. Douglas
  • The bill was passed on may 30th, 1854
  • We shall associate ourselves as the republican party who value the Abolition of slavery
  • Northern Whigs
  • This should be a free State
  • No! This should be a slave state!
