Chris refuses for his boss to pay for his college if he stays in Annandale and works for him
"When I mentioned the offer to Chris, he wouldn't even consider it. He told his boss that he had other plans."
Chris takes up Westerberg's offer of a job
"Westerberg told the young man to look him up in Carthage if he ever needed a job. 'Was only a couple of weeks that went by before Alex showed up in town"

Burres talks about how she thought Chris would do in Alaska
"He was smart. He'd figured out how to paddle a canoe down to Mexico, how to hop fright trains, how to score a bed at inner-city missions. He figured all of that out on his own, and I felt sure he'd figure out Alaska, too."

Chris brings a gun and machete to college
"During the course of his travels, Chris had acquired a machete and a .30-06 rifle, and when Walt and Billie drove him down to Atlanta to enroll in college, he insisted on taking the big knife and the gun with him."
I admire that Chris was smart enough to realize that he needed to get a job to earn money so that he could survive. If he hadn't figured this out then he could have died way earlier than he did.
Chris is found dead in the bus
This shows that Chris uses his resources around him in order to learn new things and to get places. I admire how he did this and wanted to do it for himself.
Chris had these weapons with him in college, he should have taken them with him into the wild. If he had then he could have protected himself and survived.
Chris was dumb to go out into the wild ill-prepared and it ended up with him dying. If he had taken equipment from the people that offered it to him then he could have survived and made it out of the wilderness.
