Grandpa can you please tell me about what happened during the Great Depression
Of course! It was a very hard time for us, we went through a lot.
I heard something about the stock market crashed, was that true?
On black tuesday, Oct. 29,1929 investors traded millions of shares. Millions of dollars were lost.
That's very sad, so people must have lost jobs then?
Yes, many unfortunately did. The businesses production got to high and people were not buying enough product.
They had to lay off workers which made it worst because that made even less people buy their products.
Millions of Americans started losing jobs.
wow, that would have been really hard to go through.
During that time, thousands of banks were failing and they could no longer create or give out any more loans.
There were attempts to help but many failed such as the American Economic Policy. The government created the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930 to help protect the American companies. They made less trade with other foreign countries
At least we had President Franklin D. He aimed to restore prosperity to Americans. He also did his best to provide jobs such as construction and working in national forests to those who were suffering.
Thanks Grandpa for the stories. Next time no need to yell across the street. I am not an old man like you, I can hear!
