Lizabeth goes to Miss Lottie's house with her brother Joey and their friends and destroys parts of her garden with pebbles. Then she upsets Miss Lottie more by swarming around her, along with others and shouting childlike phrases like "Old lady witch". They don't leave until Miss Lottie's son, John Burke hurries to check on Miss Lottie after all the commotion.
After over hearing a fight between her parents, Lizabeth wakes up her brother Joey at 4:00am and rushes to Mrs. Lottie's garden where she then destroys all the marigolds Mrs.Lottie planted. After getting caught by Miss Lottie, Lizabeth learns her lesson and grows more fond of Miss Lottie. She realizes her mistake and starts to become and behave more adultlike.
Lizabeth learns from her past mistakes and understands that their are better ways to deal with emotions. She now understands that the marigolds were out of place, just like her feelings. She regrets ruining Miss Lottie's marigolds, but after Miss Lottie passed away, she plants her own marigolds in her garden to thank her for teaching her such a valuable lesson.
