The black spot symbolizes pain of stones that leads to tragic death in the town. The black spot also adds suspense and fear to the towns people.
Theme - Life is all for chances
"The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny with a fresh warmth of a full-summer day."This is imagery because it paints a nice and pretty image that ironically turns bad.
Figure of speech - Personification
"A sudden hush fell on the crowd." This is personification because the hush can't literally fall on a crowd, they were all just quiet in this moment. This creates suspence and foreshadows that something bad is about to happen.
Extra Credit - Juxtaposition
One of the many themes in this story is life is all for chances, it is important because its meaning is that anything could happen and to expect the unexpected. Tessie Hutchinson probably didnt think July 27th would be her last,of all people she wasn't expecting to get stones thrown at her.
" The black box grew sharper." This is personification because the box didn't actually grow or get smarter but the fear of the towns people did. Some people realized what they were doing was wrong. This created an image of the black box growing sharper.
An example of juxtaposition in this story is how Bill accepts the fate of his family and wife. Unlike Bill, Tessie argues her family's "win." Bill readily accepts the lottery as concrete; whereas, Tessie argues that it was not fair.
