Storyboard Text

  • My name is Kenith and I am 14 years old. I live in Breecher Terrace, Kentucky where 1 in 6 people are put in prison at some point in their life. My dad and all of my uncles have been in and out of prison my entire life.
  • It's nice to meet you Kenith. I am your assigned counselor. Have you ever heard of the Sociocultural Model that helps us understand people's behaviors?
  • My name is Kenith and I am 14 years old. I live in Breecher Terrace, Kentucky where 1 in 6 people are imprisoned at some point in their life. This includes my father and all my uncles.
  • Well getting into constant fights isn't a normal behavior and Family-Social theorist say that abnormal functioning within a family leads to abnormal behavior.
  • No I haven't. All I did was get into a fight at school so I had to come talk to you. What would that have to do with me?
  • Theorists who believe this strongly believe that learning is largely a social process, and in your life you have been taught that prison is your destiny and there is no sense in trying to end up anywhere but there.
  • So you think that because my father and uncles are in prison and have never been around for me that violence has been normalized? I'll admit I'm angry with my dad for not being around. Plus everyone around me thinks I will end up just like him.
  • That would make a lot of sense. The culture in my community has made fighting and going to prison a normality.
  • Just know that you can be successful and you don't have to follow in your father's footsteps.
  • I really didn't want to meet today, but I'm happy I came. I needed to hear that my life doesn't need to end up the same way as every other man in my neighborhood.
  • No problem. It is important that you find others who can relate and want to step out from what they were born into too.
  • What do you suggest?
  • I would recommend group therapy or even family therapy if your father and mother are willing.
