Storyboard Text

  • Philip II, also known as Philip Augstus, was one of the must successful French rulers. He was able to reunite the fractured kingdom. Instead of appointing nobles to rule in government, he paid middle class citizens to do so. He granted charters, organized a standing army, introduced a new national tax, and quadrupled royal landholdings.
  • I am the most powerful leader in all of Europe!
  • There were many different motives as to why people went on the Crusades. Many people were inspired to go, and very few actually returned home.
  • I pray that God may let us take over our promised land.
  • We are traveling to escape troubles at home.
  • We hope to win wealth and land from these Crusades!
  • We are going on the Crusades for an adventure!
  • We have lost yet another to this terrible plague.
  • The Black Death was a global epidemic that infected Europe in the 1300s along the trade routes. It was mainly spread by fleas that lived on rats that would jump onto people's clothing, infecting them with the disease. The plague caused social upheaval and people turned to magic and witchcraft for cures because they saw this plague as a punishment from God. As people began to die, production declined, workers demanded higher wages, and inflation soared. This terrible disease eventually killed almost one third to one half of the European population.
  • Our longbows are more effective than your cannons! They can fire three arrows in a row!
  • Both the English and the French took advantage of new weaponry to help them win battles in the Hundred Years' War. The English longbow helped them to be victorious in battle. The invention of the French cannon eventually led them to win the Hundred Years' War.
  • Our cannons will take you out more easily than your stupid longbows!
  • Many cathedrals were built in the Gothic style. This style of architecture had flying buttresses that helped support cathedral walls, allowing the walls to be higher and to feature stained-glass windows. These windows depicted various Bible stories to serve as religious education for the people who were illiterate.
  • Thankfully our flying buttresses are able to help support the walls of our cathedral so that we can have our stained glass windows!
  • The new cathedral looks amazing, Father!
  • The need for higher education expanded in the High Middle Ages. By the 1100s, schools began to appear all over Europe. Students had rigorous schedules and were able to earn a degree in three to six years. Women were not allowed to attend university, but one exception was Christine de Pizan, a French writer.
  • Don't forget to study all seven topics, students!
  • This oral exam is going to be hard...
