I have caused you anxiety. I apologize to my community.
Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory.
We failed in our last selection. It was ten years ago, when Jonas was just a toddler. ... He (The Receiver) is to be alone, apart, while he is prepared by the current Receiver for the job which is the most honored in our community.
Alone? Apart? This makes me feel uneasy.
Since the Cheif Elder skips Jonas when assigning the assignments, everyone is confused. However, everyone gets a sense of relief when the Cheif Elder herself admits her mistake and apologizes. Then, she calls Jonas, who was patiently and nervously waiting to be called (Lowry 75).
But you will be faced, now with pain of a magnitude that none of us here can comprehend because it is beyond our experience.
I don't feel brave at all.
When Jonas finally arrives on the stage, the Cheif Elder explains that Jonas has not been assigned, but selected. Everyone else is confused, but then the Cheif Elder informs the audience that Jonas has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. This causes the audience to gasp because this position has a sad story behind it (Lowry 75-76).
The Chief Elder informs everyone about the previous failure of the selection of the Reciever, and about the Reciever. She explains that the Reciever would basically be like a hermit, but would be honorable within the society. However, all the information is unsettling for Jonas and makes him confused (Lowry 76-77).
JONAS! JONAS! JONAS!
What will happen to me?
The Cheif Elder also states the required attributes a true Reciever must have. The attributes are intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the Capacity to See Beyond. About courage, she informs Jonas that he will be faced with excruciating pain and would need the courage to defend himself (Lowry 78-79).
When the Cheif Elder mentions that Jonas has the Capacity to See Beyond, Jonas is totally bewildered. However, when he looks at the audience, they changed, and Jonas realizes that he probably does have the Capacity to See Beyond (Lowry 79-80).
They changed. I probably do have the Capacity to See Beyond.
Jonas, alone, faces the audience who chants his name in a crescendo. The audience accepts Jonas as the new Receiver, but Jonas still feels uneasy about what the future holds for him (Lowry 81).
