In the experiment there are 2 males and 2 females. The females observed and recorded the experiment, and one of the men was the one that needed assistance and the other one helped the men that needed the assistance.
The men that needed assistance carried a cain or a bottle of alcohol in a paper bag and smelt alcohol pretending being drunk. In the train there were different races and genders.
The drunk victim fell to the ground facing upwards with the eyes opened and not moving. The drunk victim received help 19 out of 38 trials.
The cane victim fell to the ground facing upwards with the eyes opened and not moving. The cane victim received help 62 out 0f 65 trails. On 90% of the cases the helpers were male and 64% of the helpers were white for both cane and drunk victims.
60% of 80 trials there was spontaneous help adn more than one person offered the victim to help. Each trial was 7.5 minutes long. The race of the victims made no difference when the people helped, but for the drunk victim there was a little tendency for same-race helping.
This experiment created arousal for the bystanders. They maybe felt fear, sympathy or disgust depending on the situation. This state of arousal can be reduced by: helping, leaving the scene or deciding that the victim doesn't need help.
