Federigo Alberighi is a renowned man in Florence for his prowess in arms and courtliness. He fell in love with Monna and tried to win her heart by joining a tournament showing off his might.
Monna Giovanna is the most beautiful and charming woman during her days. She is a virtuous lady and cared little for things done to her by men like Federigo.
Federigo has one thing that others don't have, that is, his falcon which is the best in the world.
Federigo spent his wealth too much that he ended up with nothing but his little farm at Campi to his name and his falcon. There he passed his time hawking whenever he could, asked nothing of anyone, and endured his poverty patiently.
Meanwhile, during this time, Monna was married to a wealthy man and was happy in their marriage.
It so happened that her husband became ill. Knowing his time, the rich husband made his last will. He made his son his heir, and in the event that his son died, Monna would be the sole heir of his wealth. And so, the rich husband died.
