  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • The setting of the story, "The Gift of Magi", is mostly at Della and Jim's apartment on Christmas eve and day. "A furnished $8 per week. It did not exactly beggar description but had the word on the lookout." (Henry 99).
  • Climax
  • In the beginning, Della is upset because she doesn't have enough money to buy Jim a Christmas present. "There was clearly nothing to do but flop on the couch and howl." (Henry 99).
  • Falling Action
  • Della realizes she can sell her beautiful hair to get money for a gift, so she does it. "Will you buy my hair?" (Henry 100).
  • Resolution
  • Della receives $20 for her hair. She knows Jim's watch is his prized possession so she buys him a platinum fob chain for his watch. "It surely had been made for Jim, no one else." (Henry 101).
  • They both exchange gifts and find out that Jim sold his watch to buy Della a comb set for her long hair and Della sold her hair to get Jim a chain for his watch. "The Magi bought valuable gifts but that was not among them." (Henry 102).
  • Finally, the both decide to put away their gifts and start dinner for a wonderful Christmas. "And now suppose you put the chops on?" (Henry 103).
