Lord Selkirk was a liberal democrat that lived in scotland, troubled by poor tenant farmers
In 1810 he established settlements in maritimes and upper Canada, a year later he convinced the Hudsons bay company to give him 300,000 sqaure km of land called the Selkirks grant
Macdonell led a group of scotish laboures to the red river valley to clear land but the crops failed which meant starvation occured so the next year Macdonell ordered the pemmican proclimation to avoid starvation. The pemmican proclimation banned the sale and export of pemmican from the red river colony
NO MORE PEMMICAN !!
The Metis were mad and frustrated because they relied on the proceeds of pemmican sales to the northwest colony. The Metis harrassed and burned colonists things. Which led to cameron who was the chief trader of NWC taking MacDonell to trial.
A new govener named Semple burned the empty NWC fort gibralter. This event along with many others convinced the Metis that Selkirk colonists declared war on them.
Thats right burn!!
A month later Grant (the leader) and the Metis arrived at the Metis colony, they were better armed and had military dicipline. Semple and his men confronted the Metis, within 15 mins Semple and 20 of his men died, this was called the battle of seven oaks.
