Storyboard Text

  • Woolly Mammoths were around during the ice age but became extinct in the 1700s. Their scientific name is the Mammuthus Primigenius.
  • Over time the mammoths evolved into the African Elephant gaining thicker skin, losing fur and getting bigger ears . These developements allowed it to adapt to hotter weather
  • The elephants use their tusks for digging, lifting heavy materials ( each tusk is given the power of 40 to 220 pounds), collecting food and they are mainly used for defence.
  • Elephants could live without their tusks but poachers kill them for their tusks. Elephants are severely endangered and are very close to being extinct. about 35,000 elephants are killed each year for their tusks. there are now only about 750,000 left in the world.
  • Elephants' ivory is primarily sold to China to be added to medicines, make jewellery or ornaments or for other religious reasons. Each tusk is illegally sold for around $750.
  • Asian elephants are already evolved so female elephants are not born with tusks. Tusks on African elephants are decreasing so maybe eventually there will be an evoloution to stop them being hunted.
