  • The first Continental Congress meeting on September 5, 1774 at Carpenters Hall.
  • They met to discuss the disagreements they had with Britain, including the Intolerable Acts that were foced upon them. The idea of separating from Britain was visited, but was qickly shut down. 
  • How much longer can we take this treatment?
  • They try to reason with Britain by making petitions, but laws are passed to punish the colonies.
  • Not much longer.
  • We should just make a petition. Let's not do anything big.
  • They wrote a letter directly to the King threatening to boycott him,but they are ignored once again. 
  • A year later, they came together and the idea of separating from Britain was revisited.
  • Nothing has improved.
  • Maybe we should separate.
  • Massachusetts votes yes.
  • New York obstains.
  • After discussing, all the colonies voted to declare independence, besides New York who obstained from the vote. 
  • North Caroline votes yes.
  • Virginia votes yes.
  • South Caroline votes yes.
  • On July 4, 1776, they created the Declaration of Independence and gained independence!
