All of the children had just been released from school. June 27th was the day that the village would host the lottery. The children were collecting flat rocks when all of a sudden, Mr. Summers called everyone over to give instructions on what would happen.
Everyone knew that every year a lottery would be hosted. Everyone would gather around a black box and the men would choose a piece of folded paper from it one by one by being called by last name by Mr. Summers. Whoever had a black dot on their paper, had been chosen to have their family partake in the lottery. The member of the family that chose the piece of paper with a dot on it would be stoned.
One by one, Mr. Summers called up each head of the household by last name. The head of the household would be the father. Each father would go up and pick a paper out of the black box that must stay folded until he was told to open it. Eventually, all of the head of the households had picked a paper from the black box. Mr. Summers then told the men to open their papers to reveal whether or not they had to be stoned.
There was a small chatter of who had the black dot. Then, it was revealed that Mr. Hutchinson had gotten the black dot. This meant that his entire household then had to repeat the lottery process to see who would get the black dot and who would get stoned. Tessie tried to fight back but she was told to be a good sport and her family was still forced to pick from the box.
One by one, the Hutchinsons picked a piece of paper from the black box. Eventually, all 5 members had chosen a paper. Then, it was revealed that Tessie Hutchinson, Mr. Hutchinson's wife, had the black dot on her paper.
Tessie then was forced to be stoned by all of the villagers. This includes all of her family. Tessie screamed "'It isn't fair, it isn't right...'" Then, she was stoned. It can be assumed that she died due to the hard stones' hits.
