  • Backstory
  • Laurent Clerc
  • In 1817 the first school for the deaf was founded in Hartford, Connecticut. Laurent Clerc was the first deaf teacher to teach there.  
  • James Monroe
  • The school was first named Connecticut Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons.
  • The Voyage
  • Laurent Clerc was the very first deaf teacher to ever teacher.  
  • Alice Cogswell
  • When James Monroe went to the school he was hearing a tricorn hat. The very first word the students learned was hat. When the kids saw the hat they signed the word hat. 
  • American Sign Language has French in it. When Laurent Clerc came back to the United States he learned some French from some guy when he was on the ship. 
  • The very first person who enrolled into the school is a girl named Alice Cogswell. Before Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was her teacher he was actually her tutor.
