America has to make a choice. Should she enter her name in the Selection, or should she be content with her life as a Five? Her family sees no reason that she shouldn't want to go to the Selection...but they don't know about Aspen.
America made a big dinner for Aspen hoping to soften the blow of when she told him about the Selection. But his pride was hurt and he got angry. Aspen ended up leaving America, causeing her to be very upset.
The Selection is a competition between 35 girls ages 18-21. The girls are all trying to win the favor of Prince Maxon, who will pick a wife to become the next princess and future queen. America didn't expect to find any friends there, but in fact, she did. Marlee was the first person to be friendly to America and she immediately hit it off with the exuberant blond.
The rebels have made it into the palace, America is stuck in the dungeon and scared out of her mind. But she tries to stay calm.
America has decided that she is going to put all of her feeling aside for Aspen and completely focus on Maxon.
