YOU CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE MAKING MONEY IN THIS FAMILY!
During what she remembers as a bland, impoverished childhood, Lizabeth and the other neighborhood kids threw rocks at Miss Lottie's marigolds, an action she later regrets because of its childishness.
While Lizabeth and her brother were trying to sleep, Lizabeth heard her parents arguing about financial problems, and after hearing her father crying at his inability to support his family, Lizabeth decides she needs to get out of her house with her brother.
Upon leaving her home, Lizabeth and her brother end up at Miss Lottie's marigolds, where Lizabeth finally snaps and ends up tearing up the garden. Later on, she realizes that the marigolds represented her childhood and a chance at beauty, and after she ripped up the flowers, she finally stepped into adulthood.
