  • Gretel thinks she is very mature.
  • Gretel has blonde hair.

  • Righteousness over Jews.
  • Father/Commandant
  • "Those people...well they're not really people at all, Bruno"
  • Handsome and strong
  • "Lets just hope we get to come back here when this is all over"
  • blue eyes.
  • Gretel is 12 years old. She is Bruno's older sister who thinks she is very mature and knows everything. Gretel doesn't understand the situation in Germany until a lot later in the book. Gretel is just as sheltered from the world as her brother is. Until, she started to ask questions that is.
  • Mother
  • typical blond German
  • Notice: ALL Jews are to turn in their radios by the 13th.
  • Determined to get his job back.
  • Bruno is 9 years old when he arrives at "Out-With". He is very sheltered and doesn't even know where he is living. Bruno is the main character in this book. He doesn't want to move away from Berlin at first. Once he gets to "Out-With" he is very bored but then he meets Shmuel and forgets all about  his other friends, Karl, Daniel and Martin.
  • Pavel
  • Pavel is an old man.
  • Shmuel
  • Father is the Commandant in Hitler's army. I think he loves his job more than his family. I say this because, instead of staying in Berlin he moved his whole family to the new house. He doesn't seem to mind the fact that nobody likes the house at "Out-With".  He also can't be a very good person because he works for Hitler and fully supports him.
  • Always has a very nice uniform on.
  • Bruno's mom doesn't like it at "Out-With". She wishes they could go home to Berlin and see their family and friends. Bruno's mother also hangs out with lieutenant Kotler, we don't know why this is though. Mother sometimes disapproves of father, especially with the decision  to move all the way to Poland.
  • two sided personality
  • Disagreeing with father.
  • He is a Jew.
  • Pavel washes and peels all of the veggies for Bruno's family. He used to be a doctor, but was forced out of his profession because he is a Jew. He really does miss being a doctor. One night at dinner he is really scared and he accidentally spilled wine on the "Fury". Then the "Fury" kills Pavel right there at dinner in front of Bruno's whole family.
  • Pavel is fighting for what he knows it right.
  • Angry at the soldiers.
  • Shmuel is Bruno's best friend at "Out-With". He is also a Jew who Bruno should not be talking to. Shmuel used to live with his family above his father's watch shop, and he loved living there. Shmuel and his family were forced to live in a ghetto, then he was moved to this concentration camp. Shmuel was also 9 years old in the book and he and Bruno had the same birthday.
  • Only wears striped PJ's and a cloth cap
  • Worried for his life.
  • He has a bald head
