The first, second and third wave killed more than seven million people, including Cassie's mom. Cassie lost her brother Sammy in the fourth wave as he was taken away in a bus. Cassie later lost her dad and was left alone to live by herself.
OMG!! I didn't think you were alive.
Cassie vs. The Others. Cassie doesn't know who is actually human and who is not, because they look alike. She comes close to dying by the other who are out killing the rest of humanity. "I don't like to think that the Others look just like us and talk just like us and bleed just like us. I like to think of the Others as being… well, other" (pg.5).
Cassie kills a Crucifix Soldier in the convenient store because she didn't know if she could trust him. She din't know what was in his hand and killed him when he moved. "I knew he was dead. I wanted to see what he was still holding in his bloody hand. It was a crucifix" (pg.14). Cassie would have never know if he was human or not because she killed him, which brought her flashbacks.
Cassie meets Evan after being severely injured by a silencer. The silencer was Evan Walker, but she doesn't know that, she just thinks he's her savior. "This place can't be heaven. It doesn't have the right vibe" (pg.150). Cassie doesn't know where she is at and if she an trust Evan. Eventually, Cassie begins to trust Evan and falls in love with him. She wants him to go with her to find Sammy, who's in Camp Haven.
Where am I? Who are you?
Cassie meets Ben at the camp, not knowing the other was alive. There plan was to infiltrate the military base. Their mission was to save Sam, which was one of Ben's squad members. They managed the rescue of Sammy. "I whip around to the mirror. Sammy is still alive-crying buckets, but still alive"(Pg.438).The three of them eventually get away with the help of Ben's squad members, while Evan stays behind to blow the base up.
The book leaves off with a cliffhanger, and we have no idea of Evan made it out alive after the explosion, or if humanity itself with survive. "..my arms around Sammy, Ben's arm around me, and together the three of us watch the sun break over the horizon, obliterating the dark in a burst of golden light"(pg.457).
